26-13: An Early Notable Gurley Norwegian Type CompassThis brass silvered scale compass with ring handle is a Gurley modification of a northern European instrument. The compass needle rides on a single vertical pivot and rotates in the horizontal plane permitting an accurate alignment with the magnetic meridian. It is also attached to a pair of needles on each side of the bearing cap so that it may freely dip like a standard miner's compass. This novel and sophisticated two-degrees-of-freedom needle bearing quickly gives reliable dipping angle accuracy not found in conventional portable instruments. The finish on the instrument is the original lacquer with the usual age darkening; 5" dia. brass ring handle fits around the compass for easy storage; compass in good working condition.
