W26-26. American Box Microscope signed "Gundlach Manhattan Optical Co." . This wonderful all brass microscope is one of the few American box type microscopes we've seen. Gundlach, an American microscope designer and businessman originally started out as an optician in Berlin and immigrated to the United States in the early 1870's. His business career was controversial, alternating with working independently and with other companies including Bausch & Lomb. This instrument resulted from his merger with the Manhattan Optical company around the turn of the century. The microscope is signed on the 6 in. course focusing draw tube which slips inside a split tube mounted on a 6 in. pillar. Fine focusing is achieved by a simple screw below the stage which tilts a thin plate slide support. The minimum microscope height above the box is 9 3/4 inches. The unit is complete with eye piece, objective, substage mirror, and stage clips. The black fabric covered carrying case is 10 3/4 x 3 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches, missing its handle, and its purple felt-lined interior is in excellent condition. Both the microscope and box are in very fine condition.
